1/5/23 – Nice, France

Today we found a great cafe in La Tourbie for some coffee and local advice. After discussing a few options we decided on going to see the Trophée d’Auguste which is in La Tourbie just East of Eze in the South of France.

We had a hell of a time finding the parking and entry. But we could see it from the street. We just kept walking until the fence opened.

We walked for like 45 minutes and couldn’t find the entry. The town was small and adorable so we found another cafe and had a little French lunch.

Now to find the car and the entrance.

Found it! The Trophée d’Auguste was erected in the first century BC in honor of Octavius, a nephew of Caesar who later became Emperor Augustus.

This is the spectacular view on the path to see the Trophée – prime real estate!

I mean – I would pay a lot for this view! The path was a simple and small dirt path with a fence that looked like it was used for snow containment.

Here’s what the path mostly looked like and this is the backside that faces the overlook!

We are going inside the base for the small museum then up to the very top.

This is the top!

The crazy stairs – not handicap accessible!

The monument was dismantled in the 18th and 19th centuries and some of the material was used to build the village. The Société Française des Fouilles Archeologiques excavated the trophy in 1905. Then in 1929 – 1933, the architects Jean-Camille and Jules Formigé rebuilt part of the structure thanks to the patronage of the American Edward Tuck. Renovated in 2011, the Musée du Trophée d’Auguste presents casts of the most significant remains found and photographs of the excavations.

For dinner we chose to stay in our spectacular room at Le Méridien and make up a cheese plate – very French of us!

Teri is a retired CFO and Nick is a partner in a private equity firm. We are both very irrelevant in the business worlds. We jumped up to a 52 foot boat because we were in need of more adventure. We are on the Great Loop around the East Coast of North America. It's been a wild ride!
