Our first full day in Venice. The first spot Nick wanted to show me is this very famous bridge that we had a hard time getting a nice photo.

Carlos Goldoni introduced improv comedy to the stage!

Every time you cross a bridge in Venice you are going onto a different island. The entire city is built on a group of 118 islands. So we decided to see it from the water on a gondola.

We found a small side street with a fabulous restaurant for dinner!

And soon it was time for the evening tour of the cathedral that I booked. It was quite an experience! It started in St Marks Piazza.

This was a very cool part of the tour where they shut everything off and gave us the silent treatment. Amazing to watch them turn it all back on too!

The doors were also very beautiful but because of the walls and ceilings hardly anyone noticed.

Then we were escorted to the basement. It holds the relics of St Mark the Evangelist. That is the claim to fame of Venice – even today! I don’t think St Mark ever stepped foot in Venice. It was said that Venice merchants traded for his relics that had been laid to rest in Alexandria Egypt.

This is all the basement crypt area and it is said that it will often flood but some engineers assisted with its redesign and now it doesn’t flood more than a foot or so.
