Today we woke with a growing interest in seeing Shiloh Battlefield and the National Park that is over 4,000 acres! As we pulled up these guys were coming out!

As you walk up to the entrance of the visitors center you see these large plaques that tell you about the volunteers that fought this battle.

Inside we saw photographs of generals and infantry alike. The photos were taken after the battle which I find interesting.

We watched a 45 minute movie to tell us a good summary of April 6 & 7 1862. The small museum in the main room really told you a lot about the people of that time. Several women’s diaries were displayed and used as visual and audio.
The guided tour started at entrance of the National Cemetery.

Inside, the guide took us all they way to the very back near the bluff that over looks Pittsburgh Landing. That is the area where General Grant held his troops waiting for General Don Carlos Buell to arrive. This is the bluff.

It is very sobering that we should start our tour of the cemetery near Pittsburgh Landing. The cemetery where many of the Union or as they list them American Soldiers are buried.

Once the tour was over we looked for and found the best catfish meal you can expect at Hagy’s Catfish Hotel!

Then we went to see the views of the water. It was only a few days ago that our boat had passed through this area.

Then we started our tour of the over 900 monuments.

This is where the most soldiers from Illinois died.

Can you imagine being a farmer in this area at this time?

Terrible feeling to see this grill that is no longer used for farming, cattle or living – it is used as a memorial to the brave!

Nearby were the cannons that made up the most heavy artillery ever shown on a battlefield in that day and it was by the Confederacy!

Not far from there is the Methodist Church named Shiloh Church this is where the battle gets its name. It was used to assist the injured – a kind of hospital.

It’s hard to miss the core beauty of this place! Wildlife everywhere and vegetation that doesn’t stop for any human.

Even the deer seemed to respect the quiet of the place.

The end of the driving tour brings you back to Pittsburgh Landing area and the Tennessee River.

Shiloh means land of peace.
This land is finally seeing peace.
