Day 170 @ Kankakee River Anchorage, Wilmette, Illinois – The Great Loop Boat Trip

9/15/19

So long Chicago.

Then we arrived at our first Lock since Ontario! This is the Chicago Harbor Lock. It was built to assist in the engineering project of reversing the flow of the Chicago River. It is about a 2 to 5 foot drop depending on what is happening with the water levels.

This is the first of many bridges!

This is Vista Residence. The architect is Jeanne Gang. It is going to be the tallest building designed by a woman architect. It is going to be the 3 rd tallest in Chicago only behind the WILLIS Tower and Trump Towers.

Here is the Wrigley building built by William Wrigley Jr for the Bubble Gum company offices. Today the Groupon founders own it. It was built in 1920 and finished in 1924, it was the first building north of the river used for office space.

Then The second tallest building in Chicago- Trump Tower. Originally it was promoted as being built to be the tallest building in the world but then the plans were scaled back when 9/11/01 happened. The first winner of The Apprentice chose to manage the construction. The building was completed for use of residences and hotels in 2009.

Marina City is a Chicago signature tower. It was built as a city within a city. Constructed in 1964 – 1968 it contains everything you need to live work and play. It takes up an entire city block! The joint venture that built it are the same people that built Water Tower shops and Trump Tower.

Love this view!

There can’t be anything better than cruising in Chicago on the river.

The Merchandise Mart, when it was built in 1930, it was the largest building in the world with over 4 million square feet of space. Built by Marshall Fields then owned for 50 years+ by the Kennedy’s – now it’s owned by a financial investment group.

Here is the bottom of that building.

Here is a building that Don told me about at dinner – he said it had more “air space” than real estate land space.

Then we got to the South Loop. These building have a physical address that is not a street. I used to work at the one on the left. It is 10 S Riverside – there is no street named Riverside.

The Sears tower – now named the WILLIS Tower. The one on the right is the AT&at building.

Next up the Lockport Lock! But first industrial stuff.

The Lockport Lock was not busy but we did have Loopers that we rafted off. Dream Seeker was on the wall then YOLO between us and then Galean (former USCG) on the end.

Approaching the Joliet Free Wall I was re-thinking what exactly I wanted to do… Then I totally changed my mind when I saw the backup!!!

Our friends Rick and Kim of Seabatical are in that cluster somewhere. We moved on. We waited at the Brandon wall for not too long.

We ended up finding anchorage and staying on the hook near Wilmette Illinois. We did this with Galean leading the way for us and Dream Seeker. It was a beautiful night and very quiet!

Song of the day: My Kind of Town

Teri is a retired CFO and Nick is a partner in a private equity firm. We are both very irrelevant in the business worlds. We jumped up to a 52 foot boat because we were in need of more adventure. We are on the Great Loop around the East Coast of North America. It's been a wild ride!
