Day 122 @ Thunder Bay Shores Marina, Alpena, Michigan – Great Loop Boat Trip

Waking up before the birds is not my preference. Today we rolled out of bed at 5:40 just to review the weather and NOAA apps. Here is an early morning photo. Everything seemed to get worse over night so we opted to stay put in Alpena. It was a terrible rainy day, if it wasn’t raining it looked like it was about to rain. I guess this is how they get all the beautiful flowers to bloom here! There have been several things on the boat that needed attention and some cleaning as well so we focused on getting all that completed! Nick cleaned out all the strainers and did other regular maintenance, while I cleaned out the extra bedroom and some cluttered cabinets and drawers. I also had not checked my Ring doorbell in a while and I knew that the house was empty last night so I looked to see what was going on at the Tampa home. It was too weird!!!!

If you recall, several weeks ago an orange cat crossed our Ting path a few times and once another cat did too. I think that second cat came back to case the house. He looks like he’s up to no good! A cat burglar! This was yesterday 7/28/10 at 10:16pm. I posted it on Facebook only to have several hilarious friends make comments that had me laughing for hours! Thanks Jody, Janet, Nancy, Barbi and Kathy!

Soon it was time for dinner so we reached out to Melissa and Todd and headed out to grab a bite. They took us to Austin Brewery which was very cool!

We had to sit outside because the inside was packed. The weather was perfect for sitting outside. The food was some of the best I’ve had! I had 2 sushi rolls and they were wonderful! After the peanut butter pie we shared we decided to try our hand at corn hole!

Todd showing off his near perfect form.

He didn’t actually throw that one.

The girls wine one game and the boys wine two games but that isn’t representative of the individual team members! Melissa scores most of the points for the girls! They have the game in their backyard!

This is a great place! And Todd said it used to be home to an excavation company.

Then they drove us around a bit to show us the town! Here is Todd’s company LaFarge that makes cement.

It was huge and hard to get enough in the photo.

They have their own quarry, they produce their own power, they have five kilns and it’s a massive operation.

They have 3 shift and the plant is working 24/7. Surprisingly this is very regional. They ship to Canada and the Midwest. They have their own trains, freighters and trucks! I had no idea that concrete can also very specific. In other words, cement has a certain consistency, rate of set time and even color. Customers become very loyal because of this. Here is the quart.

Then the drive back through town was cool! We saw some revitalization projects including this building that looks like an old customs house.

Melissa said it was recently purchased by a person for their personal residence! It was said that the interior became to costly to heat during Alpena’s cold winters so the owner sectioned off a portion of the interior to not be utilized and not be heated.

Great day! I’m hoping Melissa and Todd come for a visit to Tampa for a rematch in Corn Hole!

Teri is a retired CFO and Nick is a partner in a private equity firm. We are both very irrelevant in the business worlds. We jumped up to a 52 foot boat because we were in need of more adventure. We are on the Great Loop around the East Coast of North America. It's been a wild ride!
